Air pollution by chemical emissions in Zaporozhye

Despite the already familiar environmental problem in Zaporozhye, residents of the city began to complain about new chemical emissions in the air. With the beginning of a full-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine and the geographical proximity of the city to the front line, most industrial enterprises significantly reduced their industrial capacity or completely stopped production. However, the environmental situation in the city is not improving. Local NGOs decided to clarify the situation and found the presence of illegally built boiler houses in the city. Also, on September 11, 2022, the Mobile Environmental Monitoring Laboratory continued to work around the clock, which revealed an excess of the emission standards of phenol, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, etc. Subsequently, the city authorities issued an appeal in which they said that illegal so-called boiler houses, where prohibited substances are burned, are scattered throughout the city districts and called on residents of the community to seek help from the authorities or the police. In addition, specialists of the city executive committee recorded the burning of wires and a large amount of various waste to hand over metal for scrap.
